The Smoky Mountain Moonlighters The American - Norwegian ensemble THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN MOONLIGHTERS announce their debut with authority on 2009’s acclaimed “Midnight Train.” The album originated as a collaborative song-writing effort of the trio,(including Paul Gelsomine on banjo and vocals, Anders Sinnes vocals, guitar and mandolin, and resonator guitar, pedal steel player, vocalist, Roar Øien) and spreads their composing and musical work to terrific effect. They move effortlessly from driving bluegrass (“Midnight Train”) to contemporary ballads (“The Story Of My Life”) to 21st century bluegrass (“My Billy Jean, Fly Like An Eagle).” Gelsomine and Sinnes intertwine the lead singing of verses and choruses, on 5 0f the 11 songs, creating a hallmark of the still emerging Smoky Mountain Moonlighters sound. Sinnes also takes lead vocals on the compelling track “The Wonder Of It All”, and Roar Øien completes the singing threesome, presenting a rousing gospel-bluegrass version of one of his own compositions, “Grow Your Wings” - featuring dobro, mandolin and a excellent vocal effort. The same trio-sound comes through again equally powerful, but totally different in style on “Blue Kentucky Moonlight” and the instrumental closer, “Red Fox Rag.” The collection also contains outstanding outside compositions. (“Another Lonely Night”) by Ron Warner Daisley, who provides flat pick’n guitar, and Vegar Nesset & Sinnes’ immediately memorable, “Mountains Of My Mind,” placed right behind the infectious title track. Containing 11 wonderful compositions in this form of American roots style, a sub-genre of country music, indeed the album easily passes the sing along test. You’ll find yourself singing along spontaneously to songs you haven’t even heard before. “Midnight Train” demonstrates a significant growth from a good friendship, through a wonderful collaboration, to a successful debut for The Smoky Mountain Moonlighters, expanding their use of vocal power while increasing their amount of contemporary material. (The Smoky Mountain Moonlighters) Before a song is finished, it’s just faith against the odds. Both the music and the endeavor are so fragile, often only a moment of skepticism running ahead of an oblivion thought. The CD Midnight Train by The Smoky Mountain Moonlighters has been several interesting months in the making, the ins and outs of its journey into your hands may not be quite fascinating as we imagine. For that reason and for the eternal record, we will confine ourselves to expressing gratitude and debts owed to those who have been of great help to us along the way. But first, The Smoky Mountain Moonlighters would like to sincerely thank you, for choosing to spend a part of your time with these songs and stories. It’s hard to express the kind of honor that represents; that you’ve entrusted us with your time. We hope you enjoy the music on this CD, and when we have the opportunity to travel together again, we ‘ll do our best not to let you down.
